Italian OEM Arneg SpA is close to completing its first transcritical CO2 distribution center for Tong Li supermarket in Sydney, Australia.
Naimul Islam, Senior Engineer at Arneg Oceania announced this during his presentation on improving the cold chain at ATMOsphere Australia, an online conference hosted by shecco (publisher of this website), on July 28.
The expected date of commissioning is August 15, according to Islam.
Tong Li went for a CO2 system as they needed “a future-proof solution for cold storage which minimizes risks of future synthetic gas cost increase, due to the [f-gas] phasedown,” Islam said.
Installation Specifics
The new installation is in Auburn, a Sydney suburb, and consists of two storage rooms, one for frozen goods and one for cold storage.
Sydney has a warm climate which can be a barrier for transcritical CO2 systems. However, due to Arneg’s experience with CO2 installations in the tropics, “the system will be robust, as well as energy efficient in warmer conditions,” noted Islam.
The freezer room is 16.5m (54.13ft) long, 12.5m (41.01ft) wide, and 9.5m (31.16ft) high. To run at the low temperatures required, Arneg installed a 110kW (31TR) system featuring four 80HP (59.7kW) Dorin compressors.
The cold storage room is 17.5m (57.41ft) long, 5.5m (18.04ft) wide, and 9m (29.52ft) high. For this medium-temperature room, Arneg installed a 45kW (13TR) system featuring three 120HP (89.5kW) Dorin compressors.
In addition, the installation features a 34HP Dorin parallel compressor, a Modine gas cooler, Carel controllers and Carel variable ejectors, noted Islam.
“Arneg Oceania has offered a system with variable ejector technology which can give the best energy efficiency during transcritical operation in Australia’s warmer conditions,” Islam concluded.
