Compressor manufacturer Bitzer signed a five-year deal with ship builder Fassmer on September 3 to develop CO2 refrigeration systems for ships.
“Fassmer and Bitzer pursue the same interests, which we’re now bundling for the purpose of developing eco-friendly solutions together for all kinds of refrigeration systems in shipbuilding,” said Mathias Layher, Director of Sales for AC, Marine and Process at Bitzer.
The collaboration between German companies Bitzer and Fassmer will focus on further development of ships and refrigeration systems with the lowest possible GWP and emissions, taking into account applicable safety and environmental regulations, as well as cost efficiency, according to a press release from Bitzer.
The collaboration will also include the development of organic Rankine cycle systems, which generates energy from waste heat.
Bitzer specializes in refrigeration and air conditioning technology, manufacturing compressors, condensers, evaporators and oil separators, among other components. Founded in 1934, the company is now present in 34 countries around the world.
Fassmer is a family-owned shipyard specializing in design and construction of one-off custom-built vessels. Its products include lifeboats, patrol and navy vessels, cross-over yachts, research and survey vessels, and ferries. The company also works with fiber composite technology and wind power.
“Developing and using forward-looking, eco-friendly technologies is an essential part of what we do, said Holger Fassmer, Managing Director of Fassmer. “Working with Bitzer and bundling our expertise and knowledge, we’ll be able to reduce CO2 emissions even further in future,” Fassmer added.
“There’s a wide range of opportunities for partnering with Fassmer, and my team and I look forward to sharing our ideas and exploiting potential with Fassmer,” Layher concluded.
