Italian OEM Epta will feature its two latest developments for transcritical CO2 refrigeration – FTE (Full Transcritical Efficiency) 2.0 and ETE (Extreme Temperature Efficiency) – as well as new propane (R290) cases next week at the Virtual Trade Show.

Epta introduced FTE 2.0 and ETE at EuroShop in February. The two technologies were developed as part of the Life-C4R project, co-funded by the European Union.
Epta will also discuss at the Virtual Trade Show new propane (R290) self-contained cases from its U.S. division, Kysor Warren Epta US. The cases fall under three product lines, Shuffle, Tango and Valzer. Also new in the U.S. is the GranBering KW, a remote, low-temperature reach-in case that can be optimized for CO2, and door options for medium-temperature multi-deck dairy cases.
Energy savings in hot climates
The FTE transcritical system offers more than 10% energy savings compared with traditional CO2 systems, as well as installation and maintenance costs that are 20% lower, Epta said.
In the 2.0 version, Epta has integrated the low-pressure receiver into the power rack, meaning that no extra space is needed in the technical room, which results in reduced installation and start-up time, the company says.
In addition, the FTE system is easily accessible in the “narrowest machine rooms,” said Epta. The FTE 2.0 also has an Android/IOS app that provides performance updates, diagnostic alarms, and recommendations for optimization of system operations.
The ETE technology allows end users to run their transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems in all types of climates, even at temperatures higher than 40°C (104°F), said Epta, adding that it can be used in non-booster systems and in industrial refrigeration applications.
“Epta racks with ETE are modular and scalable, meaning that there’s no limit to capacity in larger industrial applications,” the company said.
With ETE, a heat exchanger subcools a portion of the CO2 coming out of the gas cooler, and delivers the refrigerant expanded to an intermediate pressure level by the EEV (electronic expansion valve) to the high-pressure line. This ensures there is no performance loss in warm and hot climates, and at the same time increasing the total energy efficiency, Epta said.
