A new project examining the pathway to zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the global cooling sector, including HVAC&R product recommendations, has been launched as a collaboration among the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP), the Cool Coalition, the Carbon Trust, the COP26 High-Level Champions, and the U.K. office of the Environmental Investigation Agency.
As part of this project, a “Pathway to Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Cooling” report will be written, including an annex containing a global product list of recommended HVAC&R technologies that use natural (or no) refrigerants. EIA and shecco (publisher of this website) are compiling the list, and are reaching out to manufacturers around the world to submit their best products in various HVAC&R sectors for consideration. The submission deadline is July 24, 2020.
The report and annex list will be released to the public at London Climate Action Week, Nov 14-20; the list will be updated for the 26th United Nation Conference of the Parties (COP26), taking place November 1-12, 2021, in Glasgow, U.K.
The product list targets end users with the aim of encouraging “non-state actors” to invest in these technologies. It will also be used to identify sub-sectors where more development is required in order to meet the pathway-to-zero requirements for cooling in the future.
Products will be collected under eight main sectors: domestic, commercial, industrial, and transport refrigeration; and domestic, commercial, industrial, and mobile air conditioning, further divided into 14 sub-sectors. In sub-sectors where there is an abundance of qualifying products, the information will be presented as a prescriptive guideline with recommendations for product types, instead of a set product list with specific product recommendations. Product lists will contain “top 10” recommended products.
Companies will be allowed to submit multiple products – at no cost. The minimum criterion for submission is that the product should use either no refrigerants or natural refrigerants (i.e. non-fluorinated refrigerants). Preference will be given to products with proven energy-efficiency features, such as suitable energy labels and high coefficient of performance (COP) ratings.
This project supports the work of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action, and in particular the Climate Action Pathways, which outline the longer-term vision for a 1.5°C climate-resilient world from the perspective of non-party stakeholders and sets out actions needed to achieve that future.
