Bruce Nelson, who was recently appointed the 2019-2020 chair of the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR), would like the trade group to create an Energy and Sustainability Committee.
“If we want to apply good science and really recognize where our carbon footprint comes from, we need to think about the indirect emissions in our systems, not just the direct emissions related to refrigerants,” said Nelson, who is president of Colmac Coil Manufacturing, in an interview at the IIAR Natural Refrigeration Conference and Expo, held in Phoenix March 4-6.
Nelson was appointed chair at the conference, succeeding Michael Lynch, vice president of engineering, U.S. Cold Storage.
Nelson plans to appoint a task force to identify the scope of activities and mission of his proposed Energy and Sustainability Committee, and present the results to the IIAR board. So far his idea has been “well received,” he said.
He envisions the committee would, among other things, “advocate on the part of the IIAR membership with regard to existing energy codes,” such as Title 24 in California, he said.
Nelson has served on a number of boards and committees within IIAR. “As chair of the organization, Nelson will continue the momentum of initiatives such as the expansion of international IIAR chapters, new product and service development, and building the Academy of Natural Refrigerants,” said Colmac Coil in a statement.
Colmac Coil Manufacturing received the Accelerate America Innovation of the Year award in 2018 for developing a low-charge DX evaporator that has been widely adopted in the industrial refrigeration industry.
