IIR New Zealand Announces 2019 Tony Barnard Prize Winner

The New Zealand National Committee of the International Institute of Refrigeration awarded its 2019 Tony Barnard Prize for Research and Development in Refrigeration Technology to Patrick Dempsey of Fonterra.

Dempsey has led numerous refrigeration projects at Fonterra with a focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and the use of natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO2, according to a press release.

Fonterra is a New Zealand-based multinational dairy co-operative which processes and exports dairy products around the world.

“He has also been involved in the replacement of R22 systems,” the press release states.

“An exciting area of ongoing work is the use of high temperature heat pumps, where a critical factor is the integration of site processing with the heat pump system. This is a new world‐wide opportunity, and Patrick Dempsey is well‐placed, and capable, to continue to lead New Zealand developments in this area.”

The Tony Barnard Award is presented biannually, by the New Zealand National Committee of the International Institute of Refrigeration, to a person under 40 years old judged to have made a significant contribution to research and development in refrigeration in New Zealand in recent years.
