World Refrigeration Day (WRD), the annual industry celebration held on June 26 (Lord Kelvin’s birthday), will focus this year on promoting careers in HVAC&R.
The theme of the WRD campaign, led by the WRD Secretariat and UNEP OzonAction, is “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World.” A full list of partners and the campaign program will be announced in the coming weeks.
Now in its third year, World Refrigeration Day celebrates the people and the technologies responsible for creating and maintaining “a world dependent upon temperature-controlled environments,” said WRD in a statement.
The goal of this year’s campaign is to “inspire students and young professionals –- both men and women –- in all countries, encouraging them to meet the challenges faced in their communities,” said WRD. “Opportunities within the industry abound for young people with a wide range of career aspirations.”
“The benefits of reaching into a wide diversity of communities for promising talent will be a high campaign priority,” WRD added. WRD believes that a new generation of “cooling champions” (engineers, technicians, researchers, educators, policy experts and executives) are needed to create the controlled environments modern life requires.
Some 12 million people are employed worldwide in the refrigeration sector, with around three billion refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump systems in operation worldwide, according to WRD. These systems provide the conditions required for health, comfort, worker productivity, manufacturing, and essential environments for food, pharmaceuticals, and digital data.
The benefits of reaching into a wide diversity of communities for promising talent will be a high campaign priority.
